Getting Into a Habit of Working Out

So it’s summer time again, and if you’re like me, you may or may not be dreading that first pool party of the year where everyone gets to see how much your didn’t work out over the spring semester.  Yeah, it can be a painful time, but it’s all the more reason to get back into the habit of exercising.  The problem is, it’s hard.  Let’s be honest, you’ve probably ran a couple miles here and there, and then told yourself it was too cold to start running again, or you thought about going to the gym, but you told yourself I’ll do it once finals are over.  The fact of the matter is, it has to be done, whether or not it’s hard for you, because, it’s good for you.

With that being said, the big question is, so where do I start?

Well, a good place to start is putting all those digital planners to use.  Let’s face it, there are apps, calendars, and even monthly planners that we can use to keep everything on track and where it’s supposed to go.  Put all that to use!

Next make sure you are using your time wisely.  Sometimes you may only get a small amount of time in, maybe 10 or 15 minutes, that’s fine, just so long as you make sure that you use your time to the fullest and get as much as you can accomplished.  You may consider circuit training or intervals.

Another great way to make sure you get to working out is doing your workouts or classes with a friend.  There’s something about having the feeling that you need to show up for someone that just gets you to show up.  Some people call it accountability.

Finally, remember that it’s ok to break things up.  A couple 15 minute workouts a day will be just as good as working out for 45 minutes straight.  Again, that is, providing you make the best of your time.

There’s no need to stress about getting back into the habit of working out.  It’s going to be hard, but hey, it’ll definitely be worth it in the end.
